Gutter Cleaning In Houston

Why Keeping Your Gutters Clean Matters

Gutter cleaning is an important part of routine home maintenance, yet it is one that many Houston homeowners overlook. That can be a big mistake. Consider these reasons why you want to keep your gutters clean.

What is the Cost of Gutter Cleaning?

Gutter cleaning cost depends on a number of factors, how many stories your house is, and the length in linear feet of your gutters.

N

Gutters Protect Your Home's Foundation

A home’s gutters are an integral part of its rainwater management system. They divert rain from the roof and foundation, helping to keep your home dry. When water pools around a house, it affects the foundation. If you notice moisture or a musty smell in the basement or crawl space, perhaps water has begun to seep through after heavy rains.

N

Debris Causes Clogs

Allowing leaves and other debris to accumulate in your gutters is a serious problem. Clogs in your gutters will prevent water from leaving your roof.  Additionally, as they settle and decompose, those leaves create a fertile ground for plants to take root. From there, your gutter problems are just going to grow exponentially. Routine gutter cleaning can eliminate the concerns.

N

Mold And Moss Build-Up

Leaves aren’t the only thing that may clog your gutters. Mold and moss can build up in the moist soil that forms as leaves decay in dirty gutters. Over time, they become an unattractive and unwelcome addition to your home’s exterior appearance. Roof debris can also cause issues. Making gutter cleaning part of a larger roof cleaning Houston is a great way to ensure that any debris washed off the roof doesn’t settle in gutters or downspouts.

N

Clogged Gutters Attract Pests

Standing water makes an attractive breeding and nesting ground for unwanted pests. After all, birds, mosquitos, and other insects love a free watering hole, and that’s exactly what your clogged gutters provide. Birds nesting in the gutters are bound to leave an abundance of droppings on your roof, siding, and walkways, while mosquitos are known vectors for potentially several serious diseases.

Clean Gutters Look Nice

This is one of the key factors for scheduling roof, gutter, and pressure washing Houston. A thoroughly cleaned home exterior significantly boosts curb appeal. We use a special combination of scrub brushes and eco-friendly, non-toxic detergent to get gutters clean. In most cases, we can remove all of the nasty dark stains that have formed on your gutter. However, keep in mind that the longer you leave those stains, the harder it is to remove them. That’s just one more reason you want to keep gutters clean.

How We Clean Gutters

Pressure washing your gutters is an excellent way to keep them clean and flow freely. Here’s what you can expect as our technicians get to work restoring the appearance of your gutters:

Inspection

We start any gutter cleaning project with a careful review to ensure the gutters are stable and accessible to clean.

Scrubbing

At that point, our technicians are ready to start scrubbing. Using a unique high-pressure system and environmentally friendly cleaning agents, we break up mold, mildew, and moss that may have taken hold in the gutters. That helps reduce friction so leaves and plant litter can easily pass through.

Debris removal

Then, we remove debris and dirt that has accumulated in the gutters.

What happens if it rains on the day of my cleaning?

We check the weather on a daily basis and that’s how we approach it, day by day. While we still work in light rain, if on the day of your service it is predicting an 80% chance or greater of inclement weather, we may reschedule you to a different day or move your appointment time to after the weather stops.

Also, we all know that the weather can change in Texas in the blink of an eye. So, if it starts pouring while we are on your job, we will take cover in our van or under a covered patio, check the radar and either wait it out, complete your job, or reschedule you if it looks like it’s not going to stop.

What can you pressure wash?

You can pressure wash just about anything! Whether it’s a good idea to pressure wash a specific thing is what you’ll want to keep in mind. Typically, people pressure wash flat surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, walkways, brick walls, etc. These types of surfaces are referred to as “hard surfaces” by professionals. How strong the pressure washer is, is what determines the surface you’ll wash.

If you have a small electric 1500 psi pressure washer, you can wash your car, easily clean off patio furniture and other “soft surfaces.” Soft washing uses lower pressure combined with special detergents to remove mold, mildew, and even dried cement from cement trucks.

If you have a gas-powered 4500 psi 5 GPM, soft surfaces like your home, patio, or wood fence can get seriously damaged. Pressure washers use much higher pressure to dig down into the concrete and lift the dirt out. Detergents can also be used with this method.

You can also use a high PSI machine if you have specialty tools like a pressure control wand or a high-pressure ball valve; these tools help the user control how much psi they want to use while working around properties with a combination of soft and hard surfaces.

What are the steps to pressure washing?

The first thing you want to do is inspect what you’re about to pressure wash. Look for cracks, chipping paint, etc. This will help you figure out how much pressure you should be using on what you’re treating. Using high pressure on something with defects can cause more damage causing potentially costly repairs or replacement.

Once you’ve determined what you want to power wash, you’ll want to set up your equipment so that you can reach the whole area without having to turn off the machine, disconnect hoses, move everything around just to set it all back up again. Try using a longer garden hose or use 100 feet of high-pressure hose so you can easily cover the entire working area.

When you’re ready to begin, make sure you have a full tank of gas and the proper PPE, including safety glasses and waterproof boots. After you fire everything up and get going, the first thing you want to do is rinse off whatever you’re spraying with low pressure (if you have a pressure-controlled wand) or stand back far enough so your rinsing without applying a lot of pressure.

It’s always smart to work in sections. If you’re doing a large driveway, use the wand to create a square; work within that square until all the dirt build-up is gone, and then rinse and repeat. If you are doing a large driveway, use a 20″ surface cleaner, this will keep you from being hunched over for long periods with a wand and will prevent those dreaded tiger stripes! You can easily rent these from a Home Depot or Lowes; it’s worth the cost and will cut the amount of time you spend in half, at least.

What should you not wash with a pressure washer?

You can pressure wash pretty much anything you want as long as you can control the amount of pressure. However, there are a few things that you should probably leave to the professionals.

Things such as stucco or a roof with Spanish tile or traditional asphalt shingles are best to be left up to pressure washing professionals. Other things like a wood fence, patio furniture, or fabrics like outdoor cushions or patio umbrellas can be easily damaged if not done correctly.

One thing you should never power wash is anything with glass. This includes your windows, the trim around your windows, glass doors, or partitions. Not only can you cause the glass to break or shatter with high pressure, but water can seep into the small gaps, and you’ll end up with a lot more water than you wanted inside your home or walls. Another thing that most people don’t realize is that you can also break the seal that holds the argon gas between the glass on double pane windows.

While you might not visibly damage anything, if you put too much pressure on the seal and it ends up leaking out the argon gas, then your window will start to form condensation or become discovered in-between the panes. If this happens, the only thing you can do is replace the whole window; one window can be expensive, but your bill could be thousands of dollars if you end up damaging several windows.
