Why Keeping Your Gutters Clean Matters

Gutter cleaning is an important part of routine home maintenance, yet it is one that many Houston homeowners overlook. That can be a big mistake. Consider these reasons why you want to keep your gutters clean.

What is the Cost of Gutter Cleaning?

The cost of gutter cleaning can vary depending on several factors, including the size of your home, the height of the gutters, the amount of debris, and your location. When hiring a gutter cleaning business, it’s important to consider these elements to get an accurate estimate.

Typically, a gutter cleaning business charges anywhere from $100 to $230 for a standard single-story home. For multi-story homes, the cost can range from $150 to $350 or more. Factors such as accessibility and the complexity of the gutter system can also influence the price.

Additionally, some gutter cleaning businesses offer packages or discounts for regular maintenance, which can help reduce the overall cost. It’s advisable to contact a local gutter cleaning business for a precise quote tailored to your specific needs.

Regular maintenance by a professional gutter cleaning business not only ensures the longevity of your gutters but also prevents costly repairs from water damage caused by clogged gutters.

Gutters Protect Your Home's Foundation

Gutters play a crucial role in protecting your home’s foundation by directing rainwater away from the base of the house. Statistics show that homes without proper gutter maintenance are at a higher risk of foundation damage. Here’s how a gutter cleaning business ensures your home’s foundation remains protected:

Prevents Soil Erosion: According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, 60% of homes have problems with soil erosion. When rainwater overflows from improperly maintained gutters, it can erode the soil around your home, creating an unstable foundation. A professional gutter cleaning business ensures that gutters are clear and functioning, preventing soil erosion and maintaining foundation stability.

Avoids Basement Flooding: Excess water around the foundation can seep into basements, causing flooding and significant water damage. By maintaining effective water flow through the gutters, a gutter cleaning business reduces the risk of basement flooding, protecting both the foundation and the interior of your home.

Prevents Foundation Cracks: Water pooling around the foundation can lead to concrete expansion and contraction, causing cracks. By hiring a gutter cleaning business to keep gutters clear, you ensure water is directed away from the foundation, preventing structural damage and maintaining your home’s foundation integrity.

Protects Landscaping: Properly maintained gutters prevent water from flooding flower beds and other landscaping elements. By ensuring gutters are properly maintained, a gutter cleaning business helps protect your landscaping and avoid soil erosion around the foundation.

Debris Causes Clogs

Debris is a significant cause of gutter clogs, which can lead to a host of problems for homeowners. A gutter cleaning business plays an essential role in preventing these issues by ensuring gutters remain clear and functional. Here’s how debris causes clogs and how a gutter cleaning business addresses these problems:

Accumulation of Leaves and Twigs: One of the most common types of debris that clogs gutters is leaves and twigs. As trees shed their leaves, especially during fall, these can accumulate in gutters and block the flow of water. According to the University of Minnesota Extension, even small amounts of organic matter can obstruct gutters and downspouts. A professional gutter cleaning business regularly removes this debris to maintain proper water flow.

Shingle Granules: Roof shingles shed granules over time, particularly after heavy storms or as they age. These granules can accumulate in gutters and contribute to blockages. A gutter cleaning business inspects and clears out these granules to prevent clogs and ensure that water can flow freely through the gutters.

Dirt and Mud: Dirt can be carried into gutters by wind or rain, and over time, it can build up and form mud, which is more challenging to remove. The buildup of dirt and mud can significantly impede water flow and lead to gutter overflows. A gutter cleaning business uses specialized tools and techniques to clean out this dirt and mud, ensuring the gutters remain functional.

Seeds and Plant Material: Seeds and other plant material can be carried into gutters by birds or wind. Over time, these materials can take root and grow, causing serious blockages. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension highlights that plant growth in gutters can lead to extensive clogging issues. A gutter cleaning business removes these materials before they can cause significant problems.

Animal Nests: Birds, rodents, and insects often find gutters to be an ideal place to build their nests. These nests can completely block the gutters, preventing any water from passing through. A gutter cleaning business checks for and removes any animal nests, ensuring the gutters are clear and functioning properly.

Mold And Moss Build-Up

Cleaning gutters is essential in preventing mold and moss build-up, which can lead to various structural and health issues. A professional gutter cleaning business plays a crucial role in ensuring your gutters remain free from conditions that promote mold and moss growth. Here’s how:

Prevents Moisture Accumulation: Mold and moss thrive in moist environments. When gutters are clogged, water can overflow and seep into walls and roofs, creating damp areas. A gutter cleaning business ensures that gutters are clear, allowing water to flow freely and preventing moisture accumulation that encourages mold and moss growth.

Eliminates Organic Material: Leaves, twigs, and other debris trapped in gutters provide a perfect breeding ground for mold and moss. By regularly removing this organic material, a gutter cleaning business eliminates the nutrients mold and moss need to grow. This proactive approach significantly reduces the likelihood of mold and moss infestation.

Prevents Structural Damage: Over time, moss can damage roofing materials and shingles, while mold can deteriorate walls and foundations. Around 20% – 30% of homes face indoor air quality issues due to mold. By ensuring proper gutter maintenance, a gutter cleaning business helps prevent these costly structural damages.

Maintains Proper Drainage: Proper drainage is crucial in keeping surfaces dry. A gutter cleaning business ensures gutters and downspouts are unobstructed, directing water away from the house efficiently. This reduces the chances of mold and moss forming on roofs, walls, and foundations.

Reduces Health Risks: Mold spores can cause respiratory issues and allergies. By hiring a gutter cleaning business, homeowners can significantly reduce these health risks by preventing mold growth through proper gutter maintenance.

Clogged Gutters Attract Pests

Cleaning gutters is a crucial maintenance task that can help stop pest problems, and a professional gutter cleaning business plays a vital role in this process. Here’s how maintaining clean gutters can prevent pest infestations:

Eliminates Standing Water: Clogged gutters often lead to standing water, which is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a tablespoon of water. By ensuring your gutters are free of clogs, a gutter cleaning business helps eliminate standing water, reducing the mosquito population around your home.

Removes Nesting Sites: Leaves, twigs, and other debris in gutters create perfect nesting sites for various pests such as rodents, birds, and insects. A gutter cleaning business removes these potential nesting materials, discouraging pests from making your gutters their home.

Prevents Structural Damage: Water overflowing from clogged gutters can damage wooden fascia boards and soffits, creating entry points for pests like termites and carpenter ants. Regular maintenance by a gutter cleaning business prevents such damage and reduces the risk of pest entry.

Reduces Vegetation Growth: Gutters filled with organic material and moisture can become a growing site for plants and weeds, which can attract pests seeking food and shelter. By keeping gutters clean, a gutter cleaning business prevents the growth of unwanted vegetation that could attract pests.

What happens if it rains on the day of my cleaning?

We check the weather on a daily basis and that’s how we approach it, day by day. While we still work in light rain, if on the day of your service it is predicting an 80% chance or greater of inclement weather, we may reschedule you to a different day or move your appointment time to after the weather stops.

Also, we all know that the weather can change in Texas in the blink of an eye. So, if it starts pouring while we are on your job, we will take cover in our van or under a covered patio, check the radar and either wait it out, complete your job, or reschedule you if it looks like it’s not going to stop.

What can you pressure wash?

You can pressure wash just about anything! Whether it’s a good idea to pressure wash a specific thing is what you’ll want to keep in mind. Typically, people pressure wash flat surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, walkways, brick walls, etc. These types of surfaces are referred to as “hard surfaces” by professionals. How strong the pressure washer is, is what determines the surface you’ll wash.

If you have a small electric 1500 psi pressure washer, you can wash your car, easily clean off patio furniture and other “soft surfaces.” Soft washing uses lower pressure combined with special detergents to remove mold, mildew, and even dried cement from cement trucks.

If you have a gas-powered 4500 psi 5 GPM, soft surfaces like your home, patio, or wood fence can get seriously damaged. Pressure washers use much higher pressure to dig down into the concrete and lift the dirt out. Detergents can also be used with this method.

You can also use a high PSI machine if you have specialty tools like a pressure control wand or a high-pressure ball valve; these tools help the user control how much psi they want to use while working around properties with a combination of soft and hard surfaces.

What are the steps to pressure washing?

The first thing you want to do is inspect what you’re about to pressure wash. Look for cracks, chipping paint, etc. This will help you figure out how much pressure you should be using on what you’re treating. Using high pressure on something with defects can cause more damage causing potentially costly repairs or replacement.

Once you’ve determined what you want to power wash, you’ll want to set up your equipment so that you can reach the whole area without having to turn off the machine, disconnect hoses, move everything around just to set it all back up again. Try using a longer garden hose or use 100 feet of high-pressure hose so you can easily cover the entire working area.

When you’re ready to begin, make sure you have a full tank of gas and the proper PPE, including safety glasses and waterproof boots. After you fire everything up and get going, the first thing you want to do is rinse off whatever you’re spraying with low pressure (if you have a pressure-controlled wand) or stand back far enough so your rinsing without applying a lot of pressure.

It’s always smart to work in sections. If you’re doing a large driveway, use the wand to create a square; work within that square until all the dirt build-up is gone, and then rinse and repeat. If you are doing a large driveway, use a 20″ surface cleaner, this will keep you from being hunched over for long periods with a wand and will prevent those dreaded tiger stripes! You can easily rent these from a Home Depot or Lowes; it’s worth the cost and will cut the amount of time you spend in half, at least.

What should you not wash with a pressure washer?

You can pressure wash pretty much anything you want as long as you can control the amount of pressure. However, there are a few things that you should probably leave to the professionals.

Things such as stucco or a roof with Spanish tile or traditional asphalt shingles are best to be left up to pressure washing professionals. Other things like a wood fence, patio furniture, or fabrics like outdoor cushions or patio umbrellas can be easily damaged if not done correctly.

One thing you should never power wash is anything with glass. This includes your windows, the trim around your windows, glass doors, or partitions. Not only can you cause the glass to break or shatter with high pressure, but water can seep into the small gaps, and you’ll end up with a lot more water than you wanted inside your home or walls. Another thing that most people don’t realize is that you can also break the seal that holds the argon gas between the glass on double pane windows.

While you might not visibly damage anything, if you put too much pressure on the seal and it ends up leaking out the argon gas, then your window will start to form condensation or become discovered in-between the panes. If this happens, the only thing you can do is replace the whole window; one window can be expensive, but your bill could be thousands of dollars if you end up damaging several windows.
